St. Gwladys takes every opportunity to celebrate the culture, traditions and history of Wales. The teaching of the Welsh language is central to this. It is taught as a second language and children are encouraged to use everyday Welsh, both in and outside the classroom. Helpwr Heddiw exploit bilingual opportunities in the everyday routines of the class. The school ensures that it embraces the Cwricwlwm Cymreig at every opportunity.

Historically, we have been very successful in the Urdd Eisteddfod at both a local and national level. Consistently winning the Gwent Second Language trophy in the past, groups of children, accompanied by their families, have gone on to compete in the National Urdd Eisteddfod, travelling to all parts of Wales to do so. The wider community’s involvement and support is encouraged and welcomed. The school is always keen to participate in any local events. Special focus is also placed on the traditional Chairing of the Bard Ceremony in the school’s St. David’s Day Eisteddfod. Children (except those removed by parents/ guardians on the grounds of their beliefs) are expected to participate in a range of competitions from art and poetry to spelling and house choirs. Alternative provision is made for the supervision of any pupils withdrawn from this event. 

The Criw Cymraeg lead an assembly, conducted in Welsh on a weekly basis, when they teach other children new phrases which they expect to hear used during the following week. Children also learn Welsh prayers and hymns.
